Can I create an opportunity or stumble upon it? What does it take.

“Opportunity is bald,
can only be grabbed by the front”

There comes a time when each one of us wants to change our luck, be in front an opportunity we won’t let pass. The greek’s contribution to the study of luck is hidden in the myth of Kairos.

For the Greeks time can be cronological or ciclical. The first one is related to the God Chronos from which all things mortal come to an end. The second one is named Aion and represents cyclical unbounded time, like any pattern that repeats itself in someone’s life. Then there is a third type of time which occurs for an instant, for a brief moment when both cycles and chronologies change. This time is named Kairos: the opportune time.

There’s a very good description about Kairos on wikipedia, so in here I’ll focus on what the visual representation of Kairos means for generating opportunities in one’s life.

The obvious

Why is he facing left? This is the first thing I questioned… For ancient Greeks and us the normal horizontal movement is left to right. Then it stands that if I’m moving left to right most of the time and the opportunity flashes in front of me for an instant, it is coming from the opposite direction.

Also, Kairos is traveling very fast as noted by the wings in the back and feet. Three pair of wings adds up to an impressive speed won’t you agree? This is also verified with the position of his right foot, that is slightly bent like when someone’s walking doesn’t want to be noticed. His left foot is ready to jump into action any instant now.

The not so obvious

If opportunity itself is faster than me and is coming the opposite direction that I’m going, then what can I do. Because Kairo’s head has only a long lock of hair in the front, I deduce that I can grab him (opportunity) only when it is still moving towards me. Once he passes by I can’t get a hold of him. To grab the next opportunity happens in an instant.

Here’s a look at the reference sculpture for this design, done by Lysippos in the 4th century BCE.

The never obvious

What drives Kairos to slow down for a moment? If I get this one right I’ll have a better chance of grabbing the opportunity by the horns! I’ll even know what it takes to generate a moment of opportunity. What I share now I have learned as a member of the E.D.I.P.O. school of initiation psychoanalysis occultism edipo.org.

Kairos is holding a scale in an odd way: his right arm is balancing the scale purposely towards him. Is this because he is more interested in an opportunity as each one of us is? I don’t think so. What the author is telling us, and what all mythologies tell us too, is that Kairos is putting who ever wants an opportunity to the test in an un-fair way. Because to be  in front of an opportunity is to be in front of the divine, and that is something to not mess with. It requires to go beyond the average, beyond one’s limits.

What does it mean to go beyond my limits? Well, it means to move towards a result beyond what I have already achieved even though of what I currently: don’t know, don’t have, can not do or don’t believe. That is enough to get Kairos to measure your opportunity against the divine.
